The non-proteinogenic amino acid ornithine has the task of converting nitrogenous compounds in the urea cycle so that they are excreted by the kidneys as urea. In conjunction with the proteinogenic amino acid arginine, ornithine is also responsible for the degradation of ammonia, the end product of protein metabolism.
