What are medicinal mushrooms?
This term refers to mushrooms that are said to have a positive influence on well-being. They are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and are an integral part of the treatment of health complaints in many regions of the world. In Germany too, medicinal mushrooms have long been used in alternative medicine. Legal note: The preparations are not currently authorised as medicinal products in Germany.
The use of medicinal mushrooms is called mycotherapy.
The active ingredients are often offered as tea or capsules with powder or extract and are therefore very easy to take. If you insist on organic, you can also find a wide range of organic medicinal mushrooms such as Organic Hericium Powder Capsules or Organic Reishi Powder Capsules.
How do medicinal mushrooms work?
Vital mushrooms contain vitamins, minerals, proteins and trace elements as well as polysaccharides and triterpenes. They have plenty of positive properties that can support our organism in many ways.
Which medicinal mushrooms are there?
According to experts, there are around 240 different types of medicinal mushrooms.
We present the most interesting ones here: Reishi, Hericium, Chaga, Agaricus, Cordyceps and Shiitake.
Reishi (Shiny polypore mushroom, Ling Zhi, Ganoderma Lucidum)
The shiny polypore mushroom is very popular due to its valuable ingredients. It contains numerous vitamins and minerals (e.g. magnesium, zinc, calcium and iron) and is rich in polysaccharides (especially beta-glucan extracts). Ganoderma lucidum is one of the most sought-after medicinal mushrooms and is used in many different ways. Reishi is a powerful adaptogen, so it helps the human body to deal with stress. Ganoderma lucidum also contains triterpenes (secondary plant substances).
Hericium (hedgehog's mane, lion's mane, yamabusitake)
This mushroom provides all essential amino acids, vitamin D and a large amount of minerals. Hericium is said to support the ability to concentrate. The hedgehog porcini is said to ensure normal functioning of the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines [1].
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus, slaty slipper mushroom)
This medicinal mushroom is particularly rich in polysaccharides, melanin and antioxidants.
Almond mushroom (Agaricus Blazei Murill, sun mushroom)
The Agaricus Blazei Murill is similar in appearance to ordinary cultivated mushrooms. It has the highest polysaccharide content among the medicinal mushrooms and is also rich in antioxidants.
Cordyceps (Chinese caterpillar fungus, Ophiocordyceps sinensis)
This mushroom is the least similar to the typical mushroom forms and can be found at an altitude of over 3000 metres in the Himalayas. This medicinal mushroom is characterised by its high content of B vitamins and minerals (selenium, zinc, iron and copper).
Shiitake (oak mushroom, Lentinula edodes)
Most people will know it as an edible mushroom, but it is a true all-rounder. This mushroom contains all the essential amino acids, many B vitamins, provitamin D (ergosterol), potassium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and calcium. Shiitake is also known to bring yin and yang back into balance.
Vital mushroom powder or extract, which is better?
Both variants have their justification and cannot be seen as directly competing with each other.
In the production of vital mushroom powder, the mushroom is gently dried at approx. 40 - 60°C and then finely ground. All ingredients (including fibre) are thus preserved. However, capsules with powder require a much higher quantity in order to achieve an optimum effect. Capsules with powder are therefore well suited for preventative treatment. The important beta-glucans cannot be optimally utilised by the body with this method.
The extract is produced by boiling the finely ground powder with water in an extraction process. Although a lot of fibre and some of the vitamins and minerals are lost, many valuable ingredients, such as polysaccharides, are present in a much more concentrated form and any pesticides are greatly reduced. The capsule with extract therefore has a higher bioavailability for various ingredients than the capsule with powder. If you want to take the medicinal mushroom as a dietary supplement more easily, extract capsules with reishi, for example, would be easier to take, at least in terms of quantity, than capsules with reishi powder.
How quickly do medicinal mushrooms work?
There is no general answer to this question. Depending on the preparation and the person, the medicinal mushroom can show its effect within a few minutes or only after a few weeks. Above all, it is important to choose a laboratory-tested preparation of high quality to ensure that the mushrooms do not contain any impurities.
