It belongs to the group of carotenoids that are responsible for the color of many fruits and vegetables, from bright red tomatoes to strong orange carrots. However, the real peculiarity of astaxanthin is that it is a radical scavenger that is many times stronger than vitamin C, vitamin E or other known antioxidants. Natural astaxanthin is obtained from the bloody alga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is a maximum of 0.05 mm large green alga from the Chlorophyceae family.
