The area of distribution of Inonotus obliquus extends mainly over the forested areas of the northern hemisphere. Preference is given to moist areas (along swamps, ditches, lakes and streams) with large birch stands, but also sun-drenched forest edges. The largest deposits are located in Scandinavia, Siberia, Japan and Canada. In addition, reserves are known in the larger forests of Eastern Europe and Russia. Efforts to grow mushrooms in an artificial environment have so far been rather negative, as the human version does not contain all the ingredients.
Chaga has been used in Siberia and Ukraine for centuries. While the mushroom was traditionally mostly processed into a fine powder and then poured with hot water, today the natural area mainly offers chaga extract, which offers a high concentration of bioactive ingredients.
